The 11 Monteviot Homestay for a Memorable Vacation
Regular enquiries for homestays in the Kurseong/Darjeeling area led us on a hunt so that we could make suggestions to Darjeeling Tea Lovers. After visiting many homes, we stumbled upon a real gem – 11 Monteviot Homestay.
It is very easy to locate as you go down the road near Kurseong Tourist Lodge. Even as we approached the gates of this quaint house, we knew we were in for a treat. It felt like we had travelled back in time. The original house is more than a hundred years old. It looks out on tea bushes that are almost as old as itself.
Their extremely friendly, house-trained dog ‘Mowgli’ greeted us. Large as he is, you will love his gentle and loving ways. I was completely delighted and a little envious of the beautifully maintained garden and magnificent show of flowers. We climbed up to check the rooms and found two very comfortable and luxurious rooms with 2 modern attached bathrooms with all the amenities. The view from the rooms and bathrooms is breath-taking. Every evening, the sunset is a performance worth watching as it sinks behind the mountain full of tea bushes.
Tuhina and Parimal Sharma (the host and hostess) are delightful people who have lived their lives in these hills and are a treasure trove of information about the hills. Tuhina is an excellent cook. We were in awe as she told us that the raw ingredients for the extremely tasty pumpkin cake and the sandwiches all came from her very own vegetable garden. Guests of her homestay are welcome to have meals there itself.
My husband and I went separate ways as we were captivated by 2 entirely different items. They have a Mercedes Benz W Series from the 1970s which is in perfect running condition standing patiently in their garage. The other is a cooking range which is at least 60 years old and is in regular use in the kitchen.
All of these were carried back by Tuhina’s parents in the year 1978 when they shifted from London to Kurseong. Dr Kiran Sharma and Dr Dhirendra Mishra were well known doctors in Kurseong. Tuhina and Parimal have many stories to tell as they talk about how their parents came to live in Kurseong or the owlets that fell into their chimney and whom they took care of. Parimal can you tell you all about the different tea gardens, different kinds of tea, tea manufacturing and the do’s and don’ts of tea.
If you are looking for peace and quiet, the Monteviot Homestay is a perfect place for you. You can go on long beautiful walks and spot different kinds of birds. The beauty of nature allows introspection and recalibration of the many issues of life.
